Spend a night in sleepy Pakbeng town and take in the wonders of the Mekong on a private cruise along some of the most scenic parts of the river on the way back to Luang Prabang.

Day 1 - Luang Prabang - Muang La

Depart Luang Prabang and drive to Muang La. Known for its natural hot springs, the region of Muang La is serenely situated on the edge of the Nam Pak River surrounded by hill tribe communities and scenic farmland.

The three-hour drive takes you through scenic countryside, past rice paddy fields and into rolling mountains and valleys. Stop en route to explore life in remote Hmong hill tribe villages such as Ban Xong Ja. Pass through the market town of Oudomxay and check into your hotel in Muang La in the late afternoon.

In Muang La, we recommend Muang La Lodge, a boutique eco-retreat that offers a rustic escape with gorgeous mountain views and access to a natural hot spring.

Day 2 - Muang La

Set off on a 4WD adventure to visit the villages of the Ikho, Hmong and Kamu people. The route takes you up 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) above sea level and offers some magnificent views of the stunning mountain scenery. Meet villagers of the Kamu tribe. Then travel to more remote mountain regions to visit a Hmong village that originated from the high steppes of Tibet. Learn about their unique way of life and the importance of their livestock. Continue to an Ikho ethnic tribe whose ancestors migrated from Tibet and China’s Yunnan Province. Enjoy a picnic lunch here before continuing to another Ikho village. Return to the lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 3 - Muang La - Pak Beng

Leave peaceful Muang La and drive four hours to Pak Beng, a sleepy small town on the banks of the Mekong. The scenic route passes through several small villages. Explore the town to discover a local temple, sample some of the local dishes and admire the beauty of the river.

Day 4 - Pak Beng - Luang Prabang

Enjoy a private river boat cruise along the Mekong River to Luang Prabang. This river journey takes you through some of the most natural and picturesque parts of the Mekong. Along the way, visit a Khmu village where the locals pan for gold, weave bamboo baskets or work as blacksmiths. Enjoy lunch back on the boat and continue to the mysterious Pak Ou caves which are filled with thousands of Buddha statues. You arrive in Luang Prabang in the late afternoon.
