Day 2 - Amboseli

Early wake up call with tea/coffee followed by an early morning game drive.

Amboseli is famous for the large herds of elephants that roam its landscape. Lion, leopard, rhino, cheetah, buffalo and a host of plains game can also be found in the park. Lake Amboseli that floods when  there is heavy rainfall also attracts an amazing variety of birdlife to the area.

Amboseli National Park, at the foot of snow-capped Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, lies 240 kms (145 miles) south-east of Nairobi. The park, almost 400 square kilometers, lies within a ecosystem ten times that size which straddles the border with Tanzania and is host to dozens of species including big cats. Kilimanjaro hangs as a mirage above the hot plains so that early explorers rubbed their eyes and wondered if they were seeing things and local chiefs sent their minions to the top to gather the silver they fancied they saw when the sun danced on the ice. The ice, with no value to the the chiefs of course, melts as the precious resource upon which the game here relies, feeding rivers and swamps that sustain life during long periods of dry, when the elephant appear ghost-like for the bone-white dust they toss upon their skins.

Amboseli showcases Africa at her big, beautiful best; the mountain, endless skies, sprawling plains. But it's residence to plenty of the small too; this is one of the few places where the rare and beautiful Taveta Golden Weaver is found.

Balance of the morning spent at leisure with lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, enjoy a final game drive to see more of Amboseli’s inhabitants.
