The London Eye is the city's most popular viewing point and it has recently launched an interactive guide to around 50 of the many attractions visible from its heights. Even lifelong Londoners who claim they know the city inside out, will rarely be able to tell you they’ve explored underneath one of the city’s most recognised landmarks: Tower Bridge. But now you, and they, have their chance. Every weekend this February and March, visitors can book to join a small group that leaves the publicly accessible sections of the bridge behind and plunges instead into its innards, exploring still-functioning Victorian mechanisms and burrowing underneath the bridge’s famous raising bascules.
The tour begins on the raised walkways, with their crowd-pulling views over the rapidly ascending Shard and the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf. From these chilly, glass-encased platforms, the guide talks through the celebrated construction innovations behind the Gothic marvel, known to the Victorians as the ‘Wonder Bridge’, and recounts key moments in its past that have since become legend. In celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee this year, Buckingham Palace will be displaying the Queen's best diamond jewellery and tiaras. The collection will be on display from August to September 2012. Other celebratory exhibitions will include "The Queen: Sixty Photographs for Sixty Years" at Windsor Castle and "Treasures from the Queen's Palaces" at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh which will include paintings, drawings, manuscripts, furniture, ceramics and jewellery. A new Charles Dickens museum has been reopened in time for the author's 200th birthday. The museum, based in the author's only surviving London house, 48 Doughty Street, holds the world's largest collection of Dickens memorabilia including manuscripts, rare editions, personal items and paintings. Opening 26th March, the "Victoria Revealed" exhibition explores the life and reign of Queen Victoria. Inspired by extracts from the Queen's own journals and correspondence, the display will include paintings, sculpture, jewellery, clothing and audio-visual displays evoking key moments and themes in the monarch's life. The exhibition promises to be of great appeal for those with an interest in the British Royal Family. Hampton court Palace will host a fascinating new art exhibition, "The Wild, The Beautiful and The Damned", exploring the meaning of beauty and love in the Stuart Court, with particular emphasis on the lives and loves of courtesans and libertines during the reigns of Charles II, James II, William III & Mary II and Anne. On a journey through the Queen's State Apartments, visitors will learn about what beauty meant in the court, how it was complemented by fashion and accessories but also explore the longer term effects of beauty and frivolity in youth.
