Mwika Village is a rural community which faces many threats including deforestation, water shortages and the consequent loss of income. The village which consists of approximately 300 people has always kept bees and used their products within the village. With the help of Akorn's Philanthropic efforts and the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) an initiative was implemented to encourage bee keeping for commercial use and provide a valuable source of income to the community.
To achieve their goal, Akorn is providing the community with the necessary equipment and training required for bee keeping. Deforestation can hinder the success of the project so Akorn is helping by implementing a tree planting project whereby they source indigenous seedlings to be planted within the arable land belonging to the beekeepers. The selected trees are not only suitable for beekeeping but are also fast growing to replenish the trees used for domestic and agricultural purposes. In the first quarter of 2009, Akorn Tanzania joined and became partners with both the Mountain Explorers Connection (IMEC) and the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP). Through its Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project in Moshi, IMEC’s aim is to improve the working conditions of the porters on Kilimanjaro. They do this by lending donated clothing at no charge to the porters, providing them with free classes on English, First Aid, HIV/AIDS Awareness and Money Management, as well as educating the public on the impoverished porter conditions and providing guidelines for proper porter treatment.
Akorn Tanzania is leading the way as a Partner for Responsible Travel by agreeing to adhere to IMEC’s guidelines, which are considered essential to the fair treatment of any porter. The Kilimanjaro National Park and the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators have established 6,000 Tanzania shillings per day for the Marangu route and 8,000 Tanzania shillings per day for all other camping routes as well as 25 kilogram load limits, fair and transparent tipping, allocation of proper clothing and equipment for shelter and sleeping, plenty of food and water, consistent crew numbers per climb throughout the trip and the same level of treatment given to sick or injured porters as climbers. For further information on this project, please contact Akorn Tanzania.
