Programme Overview

Duration: half day

Boat to Ballestas Islands, “Peru’s Galapagos,” and see the ancient treasures of the Paracas Museum

Highlights: Ballestas Islands, Paracas Museum

DETAILS

FULL LENGTH TOUR DESCRIPTION
We drive to the Paracas bay in order to take the boat out to the Ballestas Islands. These volcanic islands, famously referred to as “Peru’s Galapagos,” include some of the wildlife of their more glamorous counterpart, including seals, sea lions, boobies, Humbolt penguins, dolphins, and many species of seabirds.  Sea lions frequent the waters and the rocky shores, and may be seen swimming about your boat.

Along the way, there will be ample opportunity to marvel at the Candelabro, a mysterious and huge geoglyph that stands watch over the coastline.

Continue next to Paracas Museum.  The Paracas culture was discovered in 1925 by Peruvian archaeologist Julio C. Tello; this museum features mummies and textiles dating back 5,000 years. The discovery of over 400 funerary bundles - mummies wrapped in exquisite garments - revealed the Paracas people to be highly sophisticated weavers.

Drive back to San Martin port to rejoin the ship.
